As the heating season begins your local American Red Cross volunteers and staff are especially concerned for their friends and neighbors who are struggling to make ends meet.

As summer ends, most of us begin preparations for the winter heating season.   For local families struggling to make ends meet in a downturn economy, this may mean turning toward the use of heating sources such as woodstoves, space heaters and fireplaces to keep their homes warm.  Throughout the Northeast, the improper installation and use of these devises is expected to cause a dramatic increase in the number of home fires and even loss of life.

Our disaster volunteers and staff have witnessed the devastation that fires have caused in the lives of many local families. In the past year they have responded to 32 single and multi-family home fires, helping 88 individuals in the Mid Coast area recover from these devastating events. Most of the time these families lost everything.

We cannot emphasize enough the importance of safety when using various heating devices. Please take a few moments to keep yourself and your family safe by reviewing and following the Home Heating Safety Tips provided on this site.

Thanks to concerned people like you, the Mid Coast Chapter is at work in your community - 365 days a year. Please consider making a donation to the Mid Coast Chapter’s local disaster relief fund today!
