Our Centennial Year

1909 ~ 2009

  • 100 years of service to the communities of Mid Coast Maine.

  • 100 years of challenges - health crises; wars; natural and manmade disasters of all magnitudes; blood collection and distribution - overcome by hundreds of dedicated volunteers.

  • 100 years of caring and comfort for our friends and neighbors when it was most needed.

The Mid Coast Chapter was chartered on May 20, 1909, one of the first two local "circles," as chapters were then known, in Maine.  Among the citizens behind its formation were Joshua L. Chamberlain, Civil War hero, former governor, and past president of Bowdoin College, and Kenneth C. M. Sills, also of Bowdoin College, who became the first chairman.

Today your Chapter serves people in need in Lincoln, Sagadahoc, and northern Cumberland Counties, a total of 36 communities, through its Emergency Services, Health & Safety programs, Services to Armed Forces and their families, and Blood Services.   Its continued presence for 100 years is a credit to the time and talents of scores of volunteers, and to the financial support of individual donors and corporate sponsors.   We thank them all.
